Moravia Steel – Třinecké železárny, the largest steel producer in the Czech Republic, is postponing the construction of its electric arc furnace from 2028 to 2030. The delay is said to stem from insufficient public support, regulatory uncertainty under the EU Green Deal, steel market instability, and lack of protection from low-cost imports.

“Currently, EU trade protection rules are not clearly defined in a way that would make the change in steel production technology and the associated costs economically viable,” said Roman Heide, CEO of TŽ. The group will continue takjs with national and EU authorities to secure the necessary support. Several projects aligned with EU CO₂ reduction targets are already underway, including a briquetting line, combined-cycle power plant, and high-voltage grid connection. Over the past 25 years, the company has invested over CZK 50 billion in development and environmental improvements.
