In 2009, Kontron Transportation s.r.o. started to build a very advanced solution for powering radio communication equipment for the operation of the GSM-R system in the Czech Republic. It was an island photovoltaic system, which does not need external power supply via cable connection for its operation. The construction was carried out as part of the “GSM-R Břeclav – Přerov – Petrovice u Karviné” construction and was put into operation in 2010.
This power supply option was economically more advantageous and environmentally friendly. The whole system works even at times when solar radiation is not available. This is ensured by the power batteries, which are sized to bridge the necessary critical periods throughout the year. Over these 11 years, the system has inspired other radio railway infrastructure managers. This concept fits in with current efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.
